on the journey a telegraph pole in the evening light — a tsukutsukubōshi

tabi wa yūkage no denshinbō no tsukutsukubōshi

1936–1937 · At Gochū-an hermitage
Sōmokutō · A Landscape of Weeds (Zassō fūkei)

Notes

In the evening of the journey, a tsukutsukubōshi cicada has landed on a telegraph pole and is singing. Not a tree but that matter-of-fact telegraph pole holds the cicada's voice and the evening light. The beginning of roadside autumn, caught by a walker's eye.
