across the water the lights of the women's houses begin to flicker

mizu o hedatete onagoya no hi ga matataki dashita

1933–1934 · Begging journeys out from the hermitage
Sōmokutō · On the Begging Road (Gyōkotsu tojō)

Notes

On the far bank across the water, the lights of the pleasure houses where the women are have begun to come on. Lights that have nothing to do with a mendicant's life sway and flicker on the water's surface. The distant, alluring world of people at the water's edge at dusk.
