Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

under a snow-heavy sky i pluck the last one

yukizora no saigo no hitotsu o mogu

1932–1934 · At the Gochū hermitage
Sōmokutō · One Man Within (Gochū hitori)

Notes

Beneath a sky threatening snow, he plucks the last fruit left on the tree. Citron or persimmon, the poem does not say. The branch grows lighter, and the sky is ready at last to let the snow fall. With one fruit, this year's harvest comes to its close.
