the hand that cannot die shakes the bell, shakes it

shinenai te ga furu suzu o furu

1939–1940 · Matsuyama, Issō-an hermitage
Sōmokutō · The Crow (Karasu)

Notes

Headed "the old pilgrim." An aged pilgrim goes on his way, ringing his bell. The hand that cannot die, the trembling hand, shakes the bell. In the doubled word for "shake" the sound of an old man's pilgrimage keeps on ringing.
