Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

someone far away parted from me the tsukudani I simmer

wakarete tōi hito o tsukudani o niru

1937–1938 · Late years at Gochū-an
Sōmokutō · Persimmon Leaves (Kaki no ha)

Notes

Thinking of one who is now far away since they parted, he simmers tsukudani (fish and seaweed cooked down in soy). The stumbling grammar — "the person, the tsukudani, I simmer" — mirrors exactly a heart in which longing and handwork are stirred together.
