Eihei-ji — three poems

the sound of water never ceasing I am here with the Buddha

mizuoto no taezushite mihotoke to ari

1937–1938 · Late Gochū-an period
Sōmokutō · Persimmon Leaves (Kaki no ha)

Notes

A poem at Eihei-ji. Through the temple halls in the mountain's fold the sound of water flows without cease. Within that sound he is together with the Buddha. More than sermon or sutra-chanting, the unceasing sound of water speaks the depth of this place of training.
