Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

the sound of water far and near walks me along

mizuoto tōku chikaku onore o ayumasu

1937–1938 · Late Gochū-an period
Sōmokutō · Persimmon Leaves (Kaki no ha)

Notes

The sound of the mountain stream follows him, now far, now near. "Walks me along" — it is not that he walks, but that the water's sound walks him. On mountain roads, a person is often led forward by sound.
