Aboard the Baikaru-maru

my old home — the snow on that range of mountains shining

furusato wa ano yamanami no yuki no kagayaku

1937–1938 · Late Gochū-an period
Sōmokutō · Persimmon Leaves (Kaki no ha)

Notes

A poem aboard ship crossing the Kanmon strait. Beyond the receding shore, snow shines on the mountain range of his old home. The home he was supposed to have cast off looks most beautiful just as he leaves it. The ship pushes on regardless.
