sunlight flickering — lizard and its shadow

hi no hikari chorochoro tokage to kage

1936–1937 · At Gochū-an hermitage
Sōmokutō · A Landscape of Weeds (Zassō fūkei)

Notes

Through the sunlight a lizard darts, quick and flickering. As you read "tokage to kage," lizard (tokage) and shadow (kage) blur together. A quick creature and the swaying of light and shade — a single instant of the summer ground, captured along with the play of sound.
