Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

sunlight becomes at some point moonlight — the tree's shadow

hikage itsuka tsukikage to nari ki no kage

1936–1937 · At the Gochūan hermitage
Sōmokutō · A Landscape of Weeds (Zassō fūkei)

Notes

The light of the sun turns, unnoticed, into the light of the moon, and only the tree's shadow stays there unchanged. Beside a single tree, the hours from morning to night have flowed quietly by. A day of doing nothing becomes, just as it is, the poem.
