Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

morning dew, gently damp — i go where i want to go

asatsuyu shittori ikitai hō e iku

1933–1934 · Begging trips from the hut
Sōmokutō · On the Begging Road (Gyōkotsu tojō)

Notes

Damp with the morning dew, he sets off in whatever direction he pleases. No plan, no appointment — just wherever his feet carry him. The word shittori holds the hush of morning and the feel of a road no one has yet walked. Here, laid down plainly, is the freest shape a day's beginning can take.
