Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

the temple's bamboo shoot has become a bamboo

otera no takenoko take ni natta

1933–1934 · Begging journeys out from the hermitage
Sōmokutō · On the Begging Road (Gyōkotsu tojō)

Notes

The bamboo shoot in the temple grounds has, before he knew it, shot up and become a bamboo. The month or so it takes for a child to grow indistinguishable from its parent. The traveler's eye measures the passing of a place's time in just such things.
