Santōka Alarm

sowing into the morning light, then setting out

asa no hikari e maite oite tabidatsu

1939 · The last long journey
Sōmokutō · Heart for the Road (Tabigokoro)

Notes

He sows the seed into the morning light, and then sets out on his journey. He may never see the place where the sprouts come up. Even so, he sows before he goes. Though it is a poem of departure, its gaze toward what he leaves behind is tender. The words "into the morning light" are dazzling.
