Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

Further revised (February 1940).

sitting in the grass eating plain rice, plain rice, savoring it

kusa ni suwari meshi bakari no meshi o shimijimi

1938–1939 · Yuda · Fūraikyo hut
Sōmokutō · Cold and Alone (Kokan)

Notes

Sitting in the grass, he eats plain rice with nothing on it, savoring it deeply. A form he further revised in February 1940 from a poem made on his begging travels. With the single word "savoring," it is the depth of the taste, more than the loneliness, that comes forward.
