Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

spring has come — quick, an insect has arrived

haru ga kita ichihayaku mushi ga yatte kita

1938–1939 · Yuda · Fūraikyo hut
Sōmokutō · Cold and Alone (Kokan)

Notes

No sooner had he thought spring had come than an insect had already arrived. The earliest guest of spring, before anyone else. A bright, simple poem delighting in the sharp eye of a tiny bug. Thus does spring begin at the hut.
