Self-mockery

my shadow too chewing away late at night I am eating

kage mo bosoboso yofuke no watashi ga tabete iru

1937–1938 · Late years at Gochū-an
Sōmokutō · Persimmon Leaves (Kaki no ha)

Notes

A verse prefaced "Self-mockery." When he eats alone late at night, the shadow the lamp throws is chewing away with him. His only companion is his own shadow. He turns his forlornness into laughter, a pair of himself and his shadow.
