Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

have you died right after laying your eggs mantis

unda mama shinde iru ka yo kamakiri yo

1937–1938 · Late years at Gochū-an
Sōmokutō · Persimmon Leaves (Kaki no ha)

Notes

Having laid her egg-case, the mantis lies dead. In the address "have you died?" both surprise and tenderness live together. The whole short life of a small insect, ending once she has handed everything over to the life that comes next.
