Losing the way in the Usui mountains

the depths of the mountain all budding

yama no fukasa wa mina mebuku

1937–1938 · Late Gochū-an period
Sōmokutō · Persimmon Leaves (Kaki no ha)

Notes

A poem from losing his way in the mountains of Usui. Looking about in his uneasiness, the trees are budding all at once into the very depths of the mountain. Heedless of the lost human being, the mountain is wholly absorbed in the work of life.
