Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

the moon is bright I draw and set aside some water

tsuki no akarui mizu kunde oku

1936–1937 · At the Gochūan hermitage
Sōmokutō · A Landscape of Weeds (Zassō fūkei)

Notes

Under the moonlight he draws water and sets it by for tomorrow. The moon reflects in the water of the pail, so the water itself is bright. A nightly chore of living alone becomes, just so, the work of drawing up the moon.
