Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

a shrike cries out and those leaves fall

mozu no sakebu ya sono ha no chiru ya

1934–1936 · Toward the mountains, toward the water
Sōmokutō · Walking Mountains, Walking Waters (Sankō suikō)

Notes

A shrike cries out sharply, and the leaves flutter down. The voice and the falling leaves, two 'ya' exclamations, ring against each other in quick succession. The deepening of autumn arrives through ear and eye at once.
