Santōka Alarm

always alone — a red dragonfly

itsumo hitori de akatonbo

1933–1934 · Begging journeys out from the hermitage
Sōmokutō · On the Begging Road (Gyōkotsu tojō)

Notes

Before he knows it, he is always alone. He glances up, and a red dragonfly too is alone, perched in the autumn sky. He does not lament the loneliness; one man and one dragonfly simply stand side by side in the same scene. In that arrangement there is a faint warmth. A poem that fits the air of an autumn morning.
