hurrying home — kanakana kanakana

isoide modoru kanakana kanakana

1933–1934 · Begging journeys out from the hermitage
Sōmokutō · On the Begging Road (Gyōkotsu tojō)

Notes

The sun leans low and the evening cicadas cry kanakana, kanakana. As if hurried on by that cry, he hastens the road home. The latter half of the poem becomes the cicada's call itself, carrying the whole air of a mountain dusk.
