walking buttercups, sitting buttercups

arukeba kinpōge suwareba kinpōge

1933–1934 · Begging journeys out from the hermitage
Sōmokutō · On the Begging Road (Gyōkotsu tojō)

Notes

Whether he walks or sits, his whole field of view is the yellow of buttercups. The spring fields are one sheet of flowers, and wherever he is, he is in the middle of them. The repeated words become, just so, a road of continuous flowers. Even in the days of the begging journey there were mornings this bright. One of his well-known poems.
