Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

my lone fire blazing up higher and higher

hitori no hi no moesakari yuku o

1932–1934 · At the Gochū hermitage
Sōmokutō · One Man Within (Gochū hitori)

Notes

The fire he tends alone burns up higher and higher, and he only gazes into the flames. The poem breaks off unfinished at "blazing up," and that unfinished shape mirrors the time in which, lost in the fire, he has run out of words.
