He holds out his iron begging bowl (teppatsu), and in leaps not alms of rice but hail. A mendicant body standing rooted beneath the winter sky — and yet in the sound of the hail bouncing in the bowl there is somehow a ring of something granted from heaven. One of Santōka's best-known poems.
