Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

butterflies tangling together shade and sun

chōchō motsuretsutsu kagehinata

1936–1937 · At Gochū-an hermitage
Sōmokutō · A Landscape of Weeds (Zassō fūkei)

Notes

Two butterflies fly as if tangled together, crossing from shade into sun and from sun into shade. Written entirely in hiragana, the line itself wavers just like the butterflies' unsteady flight.
