Santōka Alarm

swaying — the treetops seem to have swelled too

yuraide kozue mo fukurande kita yō na

1936–1937 · At Gochū-an hermitage
Sōmokutō · A Landscape of Weeds (Zassō fūkei)

Notes

The treetops swaying in the wind look, ever so slightly, as if they have begun to swell. It is the season just before budding, when the branch tips blur softly. The hesitant "seem to" itself pins down the first hint of spring.
