Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

a crow on a bare tree — the New Year is over too

kareki ni karasu ga, o-shōgatsu mo sumimashita

1936–1937 · At the Gochūan hermitage
Sōmokutō · A Landscape of Weeds (Zassō fūkei)

Notes

A crow is perched on a bare tree. Seeing it, he murmurs, 'the New Year is over now.' The winter landscape restored to itself once the festive mood has passed. In the phrasing broken by a comma, there is a mock-solemn kind of loneliness.
