Santōka Alarm
日本語EN

this journey, this endless journey — a cicada crying

kono tabi hate mo nai tabi no tsukutsukubōshi

1925–1932 · Years of mendicant wandering
Sōmokutō · The Begging Bowl (Hachi no ko)

Notes

Midway through a journey with no end in sight, a tsukutsukubōshi cicada is crying. The voice that announces summer's close sinks into a body with nowhere fixed to go. Yet the poem does not grieve. Taking the cry as his companion, he simply sets out to walk again.
